El Festival del Año Nuevo chino es una de las fiestas más significativas para el pueblo chino en todo el mundo, indistintamente del origen de sus antepasados. También es conocido como el Festival del Año Nuevo Lunar debido a que está basado en el calendario lunar, en vez del calendario gregoriano. Chinese New Year is about to begin. February 7, 2008, marks the start of year 4706 of the Chinese lunar calendar and rings in the year of the Rat.

In China, the New Year is a 15-day long festival that heralds spring, the planting season and welcomes all things new. It's the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar.

No doubt festivities will be grandest in China — with feasts, fireworks, dragon dances, lion dances, lantern festivals and more — but this holiday is celebrated in other countries, too, even by people who aren't Chinese.

In Canada, many schools teach about Chinese New Year as a way of enriching the lives of students to the many cultures that make our global tapestry so rich and vivid.
